#25 Calder: The remarkable achievements

On Tuesday night at the Skydome Arena, (7.30pm) the Genting Casino Coventry Blaze will play a benefit game against the Sheffield Steelers to support one of their greatest ever players in his battle against cancer.

Adam's achievements in Coventry and the joy he brought to so many will likely never be matched. Here's just a reminder:

Calder, now aged 40 came to the club at the start of the 2004/05 season and in a glittering 6 season career with the Blaze, played 384 games, scoring 257 goals and 277 assists for a 534 point total. He remains the all-time leading goal scorer in Coventry colours.

He was a key member of all four of Coventry’s Elite League title successes and added a further two Challenge Cups, one Knockout Cup and one Elite League Play Off Championship to his trophy cabinet.

He was named Elite League and Ice Hockey Journalists Elite League player of the season in 2007/08 and was named an Elite League First Team All Star on three separate occasions.

Forming a formidable partnership with American forward, Dan Carlson, Calder re-wrote Coventry’s record books and set standards that will be exceptionally difficult to emulate.

He holds Coventry’s all time records for powerplay goals (82), game winning goals (38) and hatricks (17).

Calder, who retired from the sport during the 2013/14 season following a serious injury, also holds a clutch of club season records including most points in a season (133), most goals in a season (63) and most powerplay goals in a season (25) – all set during the 2007/2008 double winning campaign.

He is one of only two Coventry players to have recorded more than 100 points in a season on two separate occasions and is the only player to have recorded more than 40 goals in a season on five occasions.

He is also one of only two players to have recorded 5 hatricks in a single season and is the only player to have scored a hatrick of powerplay goals on two separate occasions.  He is the only player to have recorded a ‘perfect hatrick’ of even handed, powerplay and short-handed goals in the same game on two occasions.

Calder has further records to his name as the club’s all-time leading EIHL competition goal scorer (229), powerplay goal scorer (70), game winning goal scorer (35) and hatrick scorer (3).

He holds both the club and the Elite League records for most points in an EIHL competition season with 125.

Calder’s final game for the club was in the Elite League Play Off Semi Final against Cardiff Devils in Nottingham on 3rd April 2010.

On Saturday 12th December 2015, Adam's number 25 jersey was retired and raised to the rafters of the Skydome Arena.
