Alex Miner Barron bolsters Blaze defence

The Genting Casino Coventry Blaze are pleased to welcome 26-year-old defenceman Alex Miner Barron to the club for the remainder of the 2017/18 Elite League season.

The 6'1" right-shooter spent last season with Strasbourg of France where he led all Ligue Magnus defencemen for assists (26 in 44 regular season games). He also had three goals for a total of 29 points.

Before pro hockey, Miner Barron played three years of junior hockey with the North American Hockey League’s Bismarck Bobcats and United States Hockey League’s Indiana Ice and Waterloo Black Hawks. Being able to play both forward and defence, he then earned a scholarship to play NCAA Division I hockey at Quinnipiac University, going to the NCAA tournament four times, including two Frozen Four appearances, and winning an ECAC Hockey title.

After signing with the Wichita Thunder in August, Miner Barron took the decision to announce his retirement from the sport in order to focus on his newly established health, fitness and, lifestyle business, however his love for the game and the opportunity with Coventry has saw him choose to resume his playing career.

Alex Miner Barron explained, “At the time, it was very important for me to be public about retiring and my intentions for doing so. I had a business coaching & mentoring younger hockey players that I didn't want to give up. Hockey has given me a lot and I felt that it was time for me to give back to the sport and the youth of this sport.

“That said, in the back of my mind I knew I wasn't ready to step away from hockey just yet. There are a few things I want to accomplish within the game before stepping away. I have lost 3 Championships (2 Frozen Fours, 1 USHL) and I don’t want to leave the game without winning one. I believe that I can still give back to the sport and be a role model for athletes by continuing my playing career.

Miner Barron continued, “After last season in France, although an amazing experience, I feel I am ready for a more competitive league. Coventry has been on my radar for a long time as a team. My good friend Ben Arnt played here and had nothing but terrific things to say about the team, the organisation, the fans, and Coventry itself.

“The Elite League is becoming one of the top leagues in Europe and I believe is a great fit for my style of play. The fans can expect a player who wants nothing more than to win and see this team succeed. I couldn't be more excited to get to Coventry and start playing again. I love hockey and still have a lot left in me.”

Blaze Head Coach Danny Stewart said, “Although he hasn’t played the first half of the year we have received tremendous reviews about him. The exact words from his former coach were that his conditioning is as good as anyone they’ve ever seen. We were looking to add a bit of mobility to our back-end, puck movement and find a guy who can come in and improve our powerplay as well. We have a lot of hockey left and not only does this signing and Dorian (Peca) give us extra bodies but it also creates a bit of competition.”

Blaze expect Alex Miner Barron and fellow new signing Dorian Peca to be in the line-up this weekend.

The club would like to say a massive thank you to the Blaze Booster Club and our partners DRP Logistics who have both agreed to help support the signing financially.

The Blaze Booster Club is independent of the Coventry Blaze, run by the fans, for the fans.

You can join and continue to help Blaze be the best that they can be for just £1 a week.

Although a small cost to each individual, when the total is combined it's a significant amount that allows the Blaze to be able to put together this deal to add Alex to the line-up for example. Something they might not have been able to do without the support of the Booster Club.

Excitingly, all those in the Booster Club get rewarded with the chance to win a mega Blaze prize each month - these have included season ticket's, a trip to Belfast with the Blaze team and game-worn jerseys via Own and Loan etc.

Visit the Booster Club stand by the lockers in the Skydome Arena on a game night to sign-up!

They are a friendly bunch who will only be too willing to give you all the details of how you can be a part of this exciting club.
