Blaze back in action Wednesday night!
Following a 3-1 win in the Challenge Cup against arch-rivals the Nottingham Panthers on Sunday, the Genting Casino Coventry Blaze are back in action on Wednesday at the Skydome Arena with Manchester Storm the visitors (7.30pm).
The exhibition game will be Blaze’s final opportunity to prepare for the season ahead with the first Elite League fixture coming this Sunday, again at home vs. the Belfast Giants (5.15pm).
Coventry and Manchester have already met once in the pre-season campaign and if Wednesday’s game is anything like the first meeting its one fans won’t want to miss!
Trailing 6-4 with just less than a minute and a half remaining on the clock at the Altrincham Ice Dome last week, Head Coach Danny Stewart left his sides net wide open, choosing to pull Scottish netminder Renny Marr who started the game in place of usual number one Brian Stewart.
On the powerplay, and with the additional sixth skater, Matt Marquardt fired past Mike Clemente in the Storm net for 6-5 before Swedish forward Robin Bergman tied the game at six, again with Marr pulled.
In 3-on-3 sudden death overtime, the first time Blaze have experienced the Elite League's exciting new format, it was last season's top point and goal scorer, Brett Robinson who secured an incredible win for his team with 2.29 left in the extra 5 minute period.
It was Blaze’s first win away from home against Manchester Storm since their reincarnation last summer, and Danny Stewart will again likely take the opportunity to give Renny Marr more action in net and reward his British players with well-deserved additional ice-time.
Since that remarkable game last week, Manchester also kicked off their Challenge Cup campaign falling 6-4 to the Sheffield Steelers after they had beaten the Yorkshire side the night before in exhibition action by a score of 5-2.
Cody Cartier and Matt Bissonnette have impressed early for Manchester whilst who can ignore the new face of their organisation, Eric Neilson. The 6’2” Canadian with the big beard and long hair is difficult to miss, already dropping the gloves with Sheffield’s Zack Fitzgerald.
The Storm number 29 looks set to make a big impression in the Elite League this season and he’ll surely be given a ‘friendly welcome’ by the Coventry crowd as he visits the Skydome for the first time.
