Blaze bounce back with Belfast victory
The Genting Casino Coventry Blaze bounced back from a Saturday night defeat by beating the Belfast Giants by the same 1-4 score-line at the SSE Arena on Sunday afternoon.
As opposed to the previous night, the early going belonged to Coventry who went ahead through the league’s leading goal-scorer Luke Ferrara who netted his 21st of the regular season at 3.07 on the powerplay.
Blaze man-of-the-match Andrew Johnston then doubled his sides lead on a breakaway, the Canadian beating Stephen Murphy who started in the Belfast goal at 5.44.
At 14.55, former Coventry star Ben Lake produced a nice spin and finish move on the man advantage to make it 1-2.
Following an altercation beginning with Coventry’s Charles Corcoran and Belfast’s Rickard Palmberg, Blaze’s Justin Hamonic and Giants’ Shane Long dropped the gloves at 16.19, the pair exchanging a couple of punches each before falling to the ice.
Shortly after the half-way mark, Johnston doubled his tally for the night, scoring Blaze’s second powerplay goal to give the away side a solid 1-3 lead (32.45).
With a smart re-direct from Dillon Eichstadt’s pass, Matt Pohlkamp made it 1-4 (35.56) and with C.J. Motte shutting the door at the other end, stopping an impressive 44 shots, the Blaze skated away from Belfast with an impressive character victory.
