Blaze burned by Flames powerplay
The Guildford Flames scored three first period powerplay goals to help themselves to a 5 -3 victory over the Genting Casino Coventry Blaze at the Spectrum.
The home sides first came at just 1.36 through former Coventry forward Ben Davies. Their second was scored at 6.20 as Ian Watters registered his 10th of the Elite League season.
With the single powerplay response, Blaze’s man-of-the-match Luke Ferrara bagged his first of two at 8.17 with the assists going to Evan Bloodoff and Charles Corcoran.
The Flames hit right back though on the man advantage with Jamie Crooks beating Jamie Phillips (10.07) for 3-1.
A 5-on-5 goal followed for Guilford before the first period was complete, T.J Foster scoring (19.18) to make it 4-1 to end 20 minutes.
Andrew Johnston assisted by Ferrara and David Broll pulled the score back to 4-2 at 24.48 but again the Flames registered back at the other end. Jordan Rowley the scorer seconds after a Blaze penalty had expired for 5-2 on 36.09.
With his second, and Coventry’s third, Ferrara’s goal at 36.09 was his 12th of the regular season, meaning one more point will see him hit 100 Elite League points in a Blaze jersey.
With just less than ten minutes remaining Johnny Curran made it a one goal game (51.28) finishing a feed from Ross Venus.
Despite pulling goalie Phillips for the extra skater, the equaliser wasn’t to come for Coventry as the final buzzer sounded on a 5-4 road defeat.
