Blaze find way past Fife in third period
Four goals in the final period saw the Genting Casino Coventry Blaze to a crucial 4-1 win over Fife Flyers as the chase for an Elite League playoff spot continues.
After two hard fought but narrow defeats to Belfast on Friday and Saturday, the Blaze didn’t show any signs of fatigue in their third game in as many nights.
Again, though they were long frustrated by a hot netminder in Shane Owen with Matt Hackett also continuing his fine form at the other end.
After several hit posts and miraculous saves, the deadlock was finally broken in the game at 42.49 as Blaze’s top-scorer Ben Lake registered his 31st of the season with a wrap-around effort. With a helper on the opener, Alex Nikiforuk made it 50 assists in Coventry colours.
Scoring his 7th of the year, Dillon Lawrence made it 2-0 on 46.31 beating Fife’s Man of the Match Owen with a quick wrist-shot, assisted by Ross Venus.
With the momentum swung fully in Blaze’s favour, Nicolai Bryhnisveen hammered home on the powerplay for 3-0 at 48.27. Shawn Pauly and Nikiforuk again with the assists.
Coventry Man of the Match, Hackett’s shut-out was gone on 54.12 as Marcus Basara grabbed what was a consolation for the visitors as Shawn Pauly then scored his 20th into the empty net (58.36) for a final score of 4-1.
