Boutin bolsters Blaze defence

Genting Casino Coventry Blaze Head Coach Danny Stewart has bolstered his 2016/17 Elite League defensive unit with the signing of 26-year-old Shawn Boutin.

The 5’10”, 200lbs defenceman with a right shot joins the club from Idaho Steelheads of the ECHL where he was an Alternate Captain.

A native of Val-d'Or, Quebec, Canada, Boutin was drafted in the first round of the 2006 QMJHL entry draft by Val-d'Or Foreurs where he was to play over 300 games, contributing a near 90 points over a five-year period, three spent as Alternate Captain and his senior with the ‘C’ on his chest.

Turning pro with the Arizona Sundogs in 2011, Boutin brings to Coventry close to 350 games experience in the CHL and ECHL, posting 88 points over the past five years.

Highlights of his pro-career thus far include helping Stockton Thunder to the Western Conference Championship in 2013, earning the franchise their first and only appearance in the Kelly Cup finals. Boutin played a key role in the achievement, making 92 appearances in the single season, leading the group of defencemen with a positive plus/minus over the playoff campaign.

The well-rounded defenceman, who takes pride in his skating ability and quick transition most recently iced for the Idaho Steelheads where in addition to 17 points last season, he also registered an impressive +13 over 77 regular season and ECHL playoff games. This included a streak of 23 games without a minus rating.

Head Coach Danny Stewart said, “Shawn is an excellent defenceman who skates well. He will bring some added mobility to our back-end and also play in all situations. He's a puck moving guy that makes us better going forward. The more our forwards have the puck in good areas the better and he does this. With Shawn we get another competitor and high work rate, but also a guy that will be a big hit in the room. We had the luxury of speaking to a couple of our current players about him and the references could not have been more positive and similar. He will log big minutes, and many minutes for us and makes us considerably better at the back!”

Blaze now just have one more import spot to fill for the 2016/17 Elite League season which starts with a pre-season game against the Nottingham Panthers at The Skydome Arena on Wednesday 24th August.
