Dan Carlson - the opposition fan view
Former Genting Casino Coventry Blaze forward Dan Carlson will have his 26 jersey retired before face-off when Blaze take on Sheffield Steelers at the Skydome Arena, this Sunday 28th February at 5.15pm. Tickets are available now from the Arena box office by calling 02476 630693 or by booking online, here.
Earlier, a number of our own fans paid tribute and shared memories of the #26 (here). We are now pleased to share the view of fans who experienced the impact of Carlson from the opposite side:
Jono Bullard (Nottingham Panthers)
During the period when the Coventry Blaze were the dominant force in the Elite League, two names from that roster stood out more than any others. Adam Calder & Dan Carlson. It feels odd to separate them as they were much a partnership as Ant & Dec except without the shockingly bad TV shows! However, with Calder's shirt already hanging in the Skydome rafters it's only right that Carlson gets his night in the spotlight.
As a Panthers fan, back then it wasn't a case of will we beat the Blaze but how many will we lose by! If it wasn't Carlson putting a perfectly timed pass on to Calder's stick for a goal he was popping them in himself. In a time when some shirts are maybe retired a little too easily, I don't think anyone can argue that Dan Carlson (and Adam Calder) don't deserve the honour for the Blaze. They, along with Neal Martin, were a big part of the Blaze's success at that time. However, as an opposing fan I was glad to see the back of all of them!
Darren Artley (Sheffield Steelers)
Carlson was like a seamstress, he would split it, tie it up again and then finish it. There was an expectation on all sides when he had the puck, and unfortunately a fear as an opposition fan. He is someone you can sit back and be thankful you got to see play. There haven't been many with his quality before or after.
