Fitzgerald banned for two games

Sheffield Steelers defenceman Zack Fitzgerald has been banned for two matches by the Elite League Department of Player Safety, following a review of the incident which took place during Saturday night’s Challenge Cup game between the Sheffield Steelers and the Genting Casino Coventry Blaze.

In the first period of the game, Fitzgerald was given a two minute minor penalty for goalie interference. Blaze requested that this was reviewed by DOPS which resulted in an upgrade in the initial call to a match penalty for checking to the head or neck. This penalty carries an automatic one match ban.

Having considered the referee’s report and the video footage of the incident, Fitzgerald will be banned for a second game for the following reasons:

The initial point of contact is to the head or neck area.

Fitzgerald makes no attempt to avoid the contact with the Blaze player.

It was a dangerous and reckless play, which resulted in an injury.

Fitzgerald will miss the Steelers' games in Edinburgh on Saturday 5th of November and Dundee on Sunday 6th of November.
