Lake OT winner wraps up pre-season campaign

The Genting Casino Coventry Blaze wrapped up their 2017/18 pre-season campaign with a 5-4 overtime victory against hard-working French side Gothiques d'Amiens at the Skydome Arena.

Blaze were boosted ahead of face-off with the news of Marco Vallerand, Ben Lake and Kevin Noble returning to the line-up. Danick Paquette and Garrett Ladd continuing to miss out.

Basingstoke Bison pair Vanya Antonov and Stuart Mogg were given the opportunity to guest for the club, along with Gareth O'Flaherty from Milton Keynes Thunder and Blaze academy product, now with Solihull Barons, Matt Maurice.

The visitors got on the scoreboard first, later named the Amiens Man of the Match, Todd Perry registering on 5.48 for 0-1, which is the way it remained to end the opening period.

On the powerplay, Blaze levelled the game at 28.34. Captain Jordan Pietrus continuing his impressive pre-season form registering from Gustav Ahnelov.

The returning Marco Vallerand put the English side ahead with 18.30 left in the game but the French hit straight back, Slovenian Anze Kuralt at 44.29 tying the score at two.

Just seconds later (44.53), Swedish defenceman and Blaze Man of the Match Gustav Ahnelov got on the board with a strike from the blue-line before Amiens evened it again. Kevin DaCosta the scorer for 3-3 at 46.58.

Former Manchester Storm forward Mario Valery-Trabucco on a 5-on-3 made it 3-4 on 48.43, beating Brython Preece who replaced Kevin Nastiuk to begin the second period with a quick release.

With the clock ticking down, Brett Robinson with a terrific assist from Vallerand made it 4-4 at 54.45 and the game went to sudden death 3-on-3 overtime.

It took just 1.54 for Blaze to win it. Ben Lake, who has been stand-out for the team in pre-season scoring on a break-way to end the game 5-4.
