Quickfire Devils defeat Blaze in first outing
The Genting Casino Coventry Blaze began their 2018/19 pre-season campaign with a 5-2 defeat to the reigning Elite League and Playoff Champion Cardiff Devils.
Devils, playing in their fifth pre-season fixture were put under early pressure from a free-flowing Coventry side. Jake Hansen, whose speed caused Cardiff problems all night hit the post before a deserved lead came on the powerplay through Nicolai Bryhnisveen. The Norwegian defenceman shooting past Ben Bowns with Kevin Morris providing a screen in front.
Luke Ferrara with a one-on-one opportunity to make it 2-0 was denied by Bowns before Devils registered four unanswered. Joey Martin, Ben Blood, Michael Hedden and Joey Haddad all scoring before the first period was done.
Both sides tightened up defensively after that with Blaze Man of the Match Alex Nikiforuk sniping the only goal of the second period.
Brit Jordan Hedley replaced Miika Wiikman in the Coventry goal for the third period, conceding just once through Haddad's second for a final score of 5-2.
