Quickfire treble costs Blaze in Cardiff
Three quickfire goals in the middle period helped the Cardiff Devils defeat the Genting Casino Coventry Blaze 5-1 at the Viola Arena in the Challenge Cup on Saturday night.
With defenceman Dillon Eichstadt returning from injury, Blaze travelled to South Wales at full strength. The Devils were boosted by the return of Captain Joey Martin but were without influential forward Mike McNamee
The visitors took a lead on 11.02 as man-of-the-match David Broll beat GB international Ben Bowns top-corner on the powerplay.
With the man-advantage, Cardiff’s player of the game on his return Martin drew his side level at 14.38.
That’s the way it stayed until 36.14 when Gleason Fournier found himself wide open in front of net, beating Jamie Phillips for 2-1 on a delayed penalty.
It was the start of a horror 62 seconds for Coventry as Bryce Reddick (36.43) and Matt Pope (37.16) on the powerplay made it 4-1.
Again, with the extra man Stephen Dixon via an unfortunate bounce off Phillips’ pads wrapped up the scoring (45.21) for a final score of 5-1.
